Kindred Tracings
Muriel Ahmarani Jaouich, Minahil Bukhari, Russna Kaur & Michelle Sound
Kindred Tracings brings together the work of 4 contemporary artists who apply strategies of abstraction to give shape, substance, and colour to the experience—and failures—of language. By dismantling and then reconstructing language, each of the exhibiting artists affirm the ancestral connections and traditions they’ve inherited. Through a variety of artistic mediums, they explore kin and connection. Tracing lineages across silenced histories, there is an emergence of new visual vocabularies that celebrate family and the domestic lives that have survived. While each artist is responding to particular family histories, they explore the potential of abstraction to transcend the particular and resonate universally.
As Cree poet Billy-Ray Belcourt notes, “no language is placeless.” It is meaningful that new works created for the exhibition are influenced by the unique setting of Fairacres Mansion, built in 1911 and home to the Burnaby Art Gallery. Original features of the house and the Century Gardens provide context and provocation for artists to explore how visual symbols have been passed across histories of imperialism and architecture.

Roy Henry Vickers
Roy Henry Vickers is a renowned Indigenous artist of Tsimshian, Haida, Heiltsuk, and English ancestry. Born in the northern village of Lax̱g̱altsʼap (Greenville), Vickers has spent a lifetime drawing inspiration from the Gitxsan, Wet'suwet'en, Gitxaala, Tla-o-qui-aht, and Lekwungen traditional territories he has called home. His extensive printmaking practice spans more than six decades. The City of Burnaby is honoured to have been entrusted with more than 160 artworks by the artist through generous private donations. This exhibition charts the decades-long evolution of Vickers’ distinctive style and technique through the stories, lands, and waters at the heart of his work.
Vickers grew up in a culture and family which placed storytelling at the centre, and his art, writing and speaking engagements continue this tradition of storytelling from the heart. Vickers studied traditional First Nations art and design at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art located in the historical village of ‘Ksan at Hazelton. With a strong foundation in formline, Vickers’ has since pushed the boundaries of printmaking. His quintessential shadow image technique is one example of Vickers’ unique approach to creating compositionally balanced images layered with meaning. His work has become known for elegant infusions of vibrant colours and patterns based in nature which retain a dedication to the histories, lessons, and realities of the places he depicts.
Each work in this exhibition is infused with story, and cumulatively transport us across time and place. From the first arrival of light, brought to Earth by Weget, to the waters of K'emk'emeláy, each depiction reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things, and shared obligations for caretaking.

Siwash Rock
1988
Serigraph on paper, 2/50 ed.
50.0 cm x 60.0 cm
City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection
Gift of Lawrence Burr

One of Vickers’ most popular works to date,
Siwash Rock was inspired by a story told to writer E. Pauline Johnson by her longtime friend Chief Joe Capilano of the Squamish Nation. The legend details how a man was transformed into the rock as a dedication to his child, and was included in the book Legends of Vancouver. The Burnaby Art Gallery would like to acknowledge that the commonly known English name of this landmark includes a derogatory term, and would like to bring attention to calls from the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to have the rock renamed. The Skwxwú7mesh name for the rock is Slhx̱i7lsh or “standing man.” This proposed renaming is one method of recognizing the important histories and legends of the coast which predate colonial settlement, and ongoing relationships Indigenous peoples have to the area commonly referred to as “Stanley Park”.
