Ghostly Makers
What comes to mind when we think of ghosts? For many, ghosts are perceived as scary, supernatural, and uncanny beings in need of banishment or exorcism. Despite these fearful interpretations, perhaps there are more subversive and celebratory dimensions to these haunting beings—where they are seen as part of the cycle of life and offer meaningful entryways into conversations of survival and liberation. In this reading, is the present ever a space that is truly alone?
Bringing together the artists Samar Hejazi, Jacqueline Morrisseau-Addison, Keysha Rivera, Arezu Salamzadeh, and Lan “Florence” Yee, Ghostly Makers expands upon haunting as a liberatory lens to consider how diasporic, displaced—or perhaps more generally, disrupted—hauntings are expressed in craft and textile mediums. Including works that incorporate weaving, ceramics, embroidery, soft-sculpture, personal archives, and multimedia installations, this exhibition explores craft as a language for re-imagining constructions of visibility, cultural identity, and belonging. Here, we explore haunting as an alternative lens that materializes and uplifts narratives of resistance rather than lingering solely on narratives of trauma.
Curated by Carmen Levy-Milne, with support from the Killy Foundation and the Audain Endowment for Curatorial Studies through the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory in collaboration with the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at The University of British Columbia.
